Are Foxy Lady palms sterile? DISCUSSING PALM TREES WORLDWIDE

Been in pots in the greenhouse for a couple years, very hard to tell. Mine are Veitchia Joannis that we’re planted about the same time. Wow that looks like a lot of growth for 6 months since planting. I wonder if the very elongated seed has more Veitchia traits and the more rounded F2 seed has the foxtail traits? Typically I find the F1 does have the hybrid vigor, except when they are very variegated. Only the variegated FL produced viable seed so far, but none of the seedlings are variegated.

  • I can come pick up that palm at your convenience, deliver you $200 cash, plus the 3 Pseudophoenix seedlings in the pic if you would be interested in selling.
  • Lots of people have been sold green 'foxy lady' palms in the past, that eventually turn out growing up into standard foxtails.
  • I planted a 1 gallon Cyphophoenix elgans to the east of it about 3-4 years ago, so its just starting to gain some momentum.
  • @96720 Taking a look at your foxy lady in the pic.
  • There’s been a couple times where large all green forms have been available, but it hasn’t been too often.
  • Even in the slowest sickliest palm, you should notice some movement of the spear - even 1/8 of an inch in a week assures that your palm is still alive.
I bought a 7 gallon from Premier Growers about 8 months ago and it's already outgrowing the 25 gallon pot I moved it into. Here is the palm, looks very healthy aside from the obvious cold spots on the old fronds. Are they the first two foxy ladies cultivated??? Sign up for a new account in our community. Number 1 on my personal list of favorite feather-leaved / crown shafted palms so i completely understand the allure / desire to grow one ( ...or a few, lol ).. They will feel heavier than the empty seeds as well. @here does anyone have Foxy Lady seed they would like to sell? Wanting to put them out but not if they’re not a true hybrid. Hybrids seem to have a higher rate of growth for some reason. The seed looks pretty elongated, so I would think it would have a lot of Vetchia characteristics. Maybe something I might try to track as time goes on.

Foxy lady seeds?

  • I have two good size foxy ladies that are perhaps my favorites.
  • Pretty sure they keep their variegation, at this stage we can already see the difference between the variegated lot and the greenies.

  • They seem to have an overall hard time surviving.
  • The fastest way I check for viable seed is to roll the seed on concrete with my foot, giving it some moderate pressure.
Erik, the Foxtails were planted many months before the F1 Foxyladies. If so did they sprout around the same time frame? If there are variegated foxladies, they are obvious. What I have noticed is that the width of the foxylady leaves tend to be a little wider and a little more dark hairs on the leaf bases.

Are Foxy Lady palms sterile?

Already have an account? Hot and dry in summer, humid and sticky monsoon season, perfect weather Christmas time One is variegated and the other is not?? Are they famous because they are the first to produce viable seed? Being in tropical Cairns, they were probably seedlings 3 yrs ago.

Wodyetia X Veitchia AKA Foxy Lady

I came across the legendary Foxy lady palm.

Foxy Lady in Trouble!

Some died at seedling stage, and others just died a slow death, even though they were all grown in shade. They seem to have an overall hard time surviving. The only exception, would be the ones that are extremely variegated. Here is the 5th seed that failed float test. I picked up a few seed that was on the ground while taking pics. I have 2 that look just like a foxtail. I know of 1 other grower in Cape Coral that gets viable seed. There is full green and mostly green. Exactly I believe even the green form has some at some point I saw a mature green form produce some variation. Did not notice the variegation earlier but as Jim pointed out, on the lower leaf there it is. Yeah I could tell it is 100% green as well.

Foxy Lady palm

Purchased several years ago as foxy gold a seedling from a breeder in Florida. Was it grown from a seed made by nature or by manual cross pollination? Where did that palm originate? I did notice the dark spot on the side away from the walkway a while back, but it wasn't really oozing anything at the time. Yeah I had one sprout a while back but had some irrigation issues to my potted plants in my absence and it ended up drying out and dying. Never noticed seed on the variegated Foxy located in another part of the collection. Floribunda had some f2 foxy ladies a while ago. The one I'm growing in Leucadia is from the same source and purchased about the same time, as this and another "Foxy Lady" I have. I have a Butia x Jubaea F2 that looks exactly like a Butia and growth speed is very similar to Butia. From what I understand about F2 hybrids, this result is not surprising. Kind of like a cross between foxtail fiber and the very smooth Vechis fiber.
